Ad agencies do all kinds of market research that ask people what they think they want, and instead, you should be creating things that you want. If you do something and you get it, the rest of the world will get it, too. Trust your own instincts, your own intellect, and your own sense of humor.
Reading 'Youth in Revolt' might have ruined my career because suddenly I wanted to abandon all the emotional truth of something and just go out far on a literary limb with completely implausible things that relied completely on voice and humor. And what saved me is realizing that I couldn't do that very well.
I like to be able to feel as many parts of myself while watching a movie at one time. I think that's what 'Super' is - it's funny, but it's also sad. It's very touching in certain ways, and it's also got a very dark sense of humor. So it's allowed to go anywhere.
The only way I could get comfortable around people was to make them laugh. I was an obedient girl, and humor was my one form of rebellion. I used comedy to deflect. Like, 'Hey, check out my zit!' - you know, making fun of yourself before someone else has a chance to.
“When I was a kid I listened to a lot of punk music, but then along came Orange Juice, ... They really broadened my musical perspective. They were self-deprecating and had a great sense of humor. And they sounded like Velvet Underground meeting Al Green. They called themselves 'the sound of young Scotland,' a play on Motown's 'Sound of Young America.'”
“Men are getting soft and gentle and standing back, and women are getting sharper and having careers and taking a bigger place and coming out more. So there's a new kind of marriage to be seen in which the woman is dominant and makes the decisions. Her quick masculine wit and humor and idea and plan is out there before the man can even speak.”
“Don't be careless about yourselves--on the other hand not too careful. Live well but do not flaunt it. Laugh a little and teach your men to laugh--get good humor under fire--war is a game that's played with a smile. If you can't smile, grin. If you can't grin, keep out of the way till you can.”
“During rehearsals, to keep things lively, I'd sometimes make up something a little dirty - or very dirty. A lot of us have improv backgrounds, and everyone would crack up. People would say, 'I wish we had taped this.' I think the sentences are the kind of thing that lends itself to the dark side of humor.”
“The success of our creative is driven by the right blend of humor with a memorable message that resonates with a wide audience. Everyone can relate to working with a bunch of monkeys on some level. We appreciate the honors and look forward to building on the momentum we created this year in 2006 as we tackle the Super Bowl and other major events once again.”
When it gets down to having to use violence, then you are playing the system’s game. The establishment will irritate you – pull your beard, flick your face – to make you fight. Because once they’ve got you violent, then they know how to handle you. The only thing they don’t know how to handle is non-violence and humor.
