Quotes by Pippa DaCosta

One of my earliest memories was of a maze of pale green walls. The corridors never ended, no matter which way I turned. I was running, my feet bare, my paper-thin gown flapping around skinny foal-like legs, and the demons kept on coming. I’d run the maze before, because I always knew which way to turn to find the little clear plastic box. I’d run, and run. Lungs aching, throat burning, my feet slapping against the smooth floor, and the sound of scrabbling claws chased me down. I made it to the box, every time (I’d learned later, there were others who hadn’t) and once inside, I’d yank the clear door closed. The demons didn’t see the box. They saw only me, the wraith-like little half-blood girl. They would launch themselves—claws extended, jaws wide, eyes ablaze—and slam into my box, sending shudders rattling through my bones. They’d snap and snarl, hook their teeth into the box and gnaw at its edges, desperate to get to the feast huddling a few millimeters away. Flooding, the Institute had called it. At first I was afraid, and I learned how to run. Then I was angry, and I learned how to fight with my fists and my element. Then, I got even. I lured those demons into a corner and ambushed them, killing every last one. After countless visits to the maze, after weeks, years, I’d started liking it, and killing became as natural as breathing. It was what I was good at. What I was made for. What I lived for.© Copyright Pippa DaCosta 2016.

We are not so different, and yet we are worlds apart. Ahkeel/Akil, The Veil Series prequel.

You’re not going to fight me, Captain. This is the right call. You know it.”She marched me off the bridge and into the brilliant white passageway. “You think I’m just going to trust you’ll let me go?” I asked, getting a painful nudge in the back.“You don’t have a choice.” She was right about that. “Relax. I got your back, Cale.”“You’ve got a pistol in my back is what you’ve got.”“Just like old times.”Trust her? Well, shit.

I should have known he’d be trouble as soon as he walked into my workshop, but I couldn’t have known he’d be the death of me.

Only a few hairline fractures around his eyes and lips spoke of the torment he’d been through. I wanted to smooth those lines away, and wished it was that easy to erase the scars of our past. ~ Muse, Drowning In The Dark #4 The Veil Series.

People are dying out there, and I’m not faring much better.”“Worrying about the demise of anonymous people won’t bring them back.”Pursing my lips, I planted a hand on a hip. “How very demon of you.”“Thank you.”“That wasn’t a compliment.”~ Muse & Akil

Akil, humans have these wonderful little things we like to cling onto, called souls. The jury’s still out as to whether demons have them, I sincerely doubt you do. ~ Muse.

I don’t know if I can.”I splayed my hand on the bulkhead beside Frans shoulder and looked her in those pretty green eyes. “It’s easier if you don’t think about it. Shut it away, think about something else. Drink, fuck, do what you gotta do. Bury it so damn deep, it can’t touch you. And before long, you’ll forget what you were worried about.”Her lips turned down at the corners. She closed her eyes and sighed. “Is that what you do?”“It works.” Or it had. Until recently. Until One somehow made me look at myself though her eyes. Now I had shit going on in my head, like not wanting to let her down. Not wanting to let any of them down. Like this life and my place in it might actually mean something. That kinda thinking would get a man killed. ~ Caleb

I may not have believed in lady luck, but I believed in her fucking sister, irony. That bitch was out to nail me to wall. ~ Caleb

It didnt take a synthetic mind to decipher Caleb Shepperd, just a human one. ~ #1001

And there’s no synthetic owners manual?” His lips twitched, smile threatening to break into a grin. A joke. He wasn’t funny. “Do you come with an owners’ manual, Captain? Because I’d like to study your troubleshooting section.”“Would you like to strip me down to my nuts and bolts, and figure out what makes me tick?”“I knew what made you tick from the moment we first met. That’s why I punched you between the legs.”~ #1001 & Caleb

I knew revenge like the ghost of an old friend. ~ #1001

You have a job?”“Do you think I just fucking run this ship so I can call myself captain and get laid?”“Well, no. I thought you were a criminal.

I could never run from the half of me that danced in the dark.

You’d best teach me how to raise hell because we’re going to need it.

Ideas take root at the oddest moments. Some grow into novels, the weaker ones wither and die.

No demon could ever care enough to let go. ~ Muse

History repeats.

I am chaos eternal. I desire everything this world and the next offers. I am greed, I am hunger. Oh how I hunger... I want the pathetic mortals of this world to bow before me. I want all that they own, all they desire, every marvelous creation of theirs, but there is only one thing in this world that I need, and that, Muse, is you.

Without the queen pulling your strings, you’re nothing but thoughts and dreams. Such things are easily destroyed. ~ General Kael, City of Fae #2
