“For the initial Memory Ride, we had six riders, consisting of mostly family and friends. And last year, 150 riders from all over the country participated in what truly turned out to be a terrific event. This year marks our 10th Anniversary and we are still striving to promote awareness of Alzheimer's as well as help fund research.”
“We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased. We have spent a lot of energy in outreach to the public regarding trespassing issues. We have had tremendous support from law enforcement up and down the line, trying to get the message out that trespassing can have fatal consequences. That is what we saw today.”
“It's a cool idea, ... A lot of them come from the inner city or broken families where they might not get an education or be able to afford an education. They're not just taken away from their parents -- their parents are involved. There's one home for girls and two for boys, and they have a graduate student or social worker there who are like houseparents.”
“At our community level, it is a very, very deep issue. The underlying issue is family values--parents have to work odd shifts, for example, but who becomes responsible for staying at home with a 13-year-old when everybody's working? Kids today are without structure, and without structure, you're going to do what you want to do.”
“It's a family business. My mother and my three daughters help me. We all work together. If it weren't for my daughters helping me and my friend, Kathy Edwards who owns the building, telling me I could do it, I couldn't have done it. They are my stability as far as keeping things going.”
“This has been a difficult week for Jill's family and for us. Jill's deep love for Iraq and the Iraqi people have come out in the published statements by a number of her Iraqi friends and fellow reporters. She is committed to helping the world understand the great good to be found in Iraq and its people, despite the struggles it is going through now.”
“I found out that two of my students have lost everything, one of them will not be returning to St. Peter's because her parents had to place her with family members out of the area. I found out that another one of my students has moved to Birmingham with his mother as well so he will not be returning.”
“Today, we honor the sacrifice of another brave Rhode Islander who died serving his country. Corporal St. Germain, along with every man and woman in America's armed forces, deserves our respect and gratitude for his deep commitment to our nation. The thoughts and prayers of my wife, Sue, and I are with Brian's family and friends.”
“[Silverman says her family has no objections to her routine:] We're all narcissists. Some things I've said about my dad are unflattering, to say the least. But he loves it; the audience is laughing. We love each other, all of us. There's no bad blood. ... It's a cycle. It's like molestation, but in a good way.”
“The challenge is to really empower people to voice their values and concerns and get them to talk to their friends, their families, their neighbors and the people that represent them. That is really where the Sierra Club is now moving: more locally, getting individual citizens reconnected to their communities, and helping them really take responsibility for the future of the environment. Not just nationally but in communities where they live.”
